According to Davies and Tingay, the Sidoarjo mudflow was caused by human error (by drilling for gas by private company PT Lapindo Brantas, owned by the family of welfare minister Aburizal Bakrie), but still based on the statement of Vice President of Indonesia the Sidoarjo mudflow was triggered by a subterranean volcanic eruption, following a strong earthquake in Yogyakarta.
